Overview Dataquest Ranking

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, in West Bengal is the top technology and engineering college of the country, edging out IIT-Madras which held the position last year, a survey said on Tuesday.
According to the survey by Data Quest, a technology magazine in India, and International Data Corporation (IDC), a US-headquartered research firm, the seven IITs have bagged the top seven positions. IIT-Kharagpur climbed two places to the first slot.
The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal, has stormed into the top 10 list for the first time.
While IIT-Madras has slipped from the top slot to second position, IIT-Bombay climbed two spots to occupy the third slot.
The premier IIT-Delhi had slid to fourth from No.2 last year, while IIT-Roorkee has jumped two places to fifth spot.
IIT-Guwahati is ranked sixth, while IIT-Kanpur is surprisingly the last in the rung of IITs at seventh spot.
Describing the National Institute of Technology (formerly, Regional Engineering College) Warangal, being in the top 10, the study said that for the "first time, a second-rung school broke into the Top 10 list". It was at number eight, up four notches from last year.
While Indian Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, bagged the ninth spot, Institute of Technology of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) was at 10th spot.
Dataquest and IDC had surveyed 117 top technology and engineering colleges of the country. The ranks were awarded based on composite scores arrived on the basis of parameters like placements, infrastructure, academic environment, industry interface and HR perception.
The survey found that over one-third of the engineering students from the top 100 engineering colleges were recruited by IT companies in 2007. The number of students employed on campus rose to 87 percent this year against 72 percent last year.
The survey underlined the growth of second-tier engineering schools - six NITs formerly known as Regional Engineering Colleges (REC) have entered the Top 20 list.
Of these, NIT-Hamirpur (Himachal Pradesh) showed the most remarkable progress, moving up 14 places to rank 20. The survey attributes the rise of NIT-Hamirpur to a marked improvement in every parameter like increase in the number of IT companies visiting the campus for placements and average number of research papers.
NIT-Calicut (Kerala), NIT-Kurukshetra (Haryana) and IIIT-Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh) registered the highest growth in terms of companies visiting campuses for placements. Over 22 technology schools have shown a shift of more than 10 positions.
Private institutes increased their placement performance to 75 percent from 60 percent last year. The survey found that private institutes are lacking in the number of faculty members with a PhD, which it said was as low as 21 percent compared to NITs (64 percent) and IITs (94 percent).
The survey underlined that in 2007 the average annual salary has gone up by 28 percent to Rs.341,000 from Rs.266,000 in 2006. The maximum salary offered by IT companies has increased from Rs.1.5 million per annum last year to Rs.1.8 million this year.

SCOPE:Petro Chemical,Chemical Engineering

There are lot of opportunities for petrochemical engineers in INDIA and abroad, as they deal with Applying scientific and mathematical principles , synthesizing new materials, transforming combinations of elements of matter and developing the processes to do it all safely, efficiently and on a large scale. Using petrochemicals, engineers process and package many of the foods, clothes, help power our cars and heat our homes and develop new materials from garbage. Petrochemical engineers are like alchemists; they turn raw materials into valuable products. They usually work with a team of chemists. Petrochemical engineers will often specialize in a particular area once they become established, including biochemistry, the environment or petrochemical refining.
Chemical engineering largely involves the design and maintenance of chemical processes for large-scale manufacture. The development of the large-scale processes characteristic of industrialized economies is a feat of chemical engineering, not chemistry. The modern discipline of chemical engineering encompasses much more than just process engineering. Chemical engineers are now engaged in the development and production of a diverse range of products, as well as in commodity and specialty chemicals.
One can also find research/job opportunities in any chemical process and petrochemical industries. You also work in pharmaceuticals, healthcare, pulp and paper, food processing, polymers, biotechnology, environmental health and safety industries, etc. Job opportunities are also available in chemical/fertilizer plants, petroleum refineries, plastics and yarn manufacturing companies, and mineral processing industries and so on.
One can pursue M.Tech from BITS(www.bits-pilani.ac.in ), The School of Engineering and Technology Bharathidasan University(www.bdu.ac.in), Vellore Institute of Technology (www.vit.ac.in), but they all provide M.tech degree in energy and petrochemicals not purely in petrochemicals.Futher you can opt for M.Sc. Engineering ,Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering( by Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore (www.iisc.ernet.in) ) and ME Chemical Engineering .Selections to these programmes are based on the GATE score.
And IIT’s do provide integrated courses in chemical engineering for 5years.Infact IIT Kanpur is ranked among the nation's top schools in Chemical Engineering further IIT Kharagpur, Madras, Delhi and Roorkee provide this integrated course in various branches of chemical and petrochemical sciences.

B.E. Vs B.Tech

BE is supposed to be more knowledge oriented where as B Tech is skill oriented. Now a days, nobody is caring about the by definition difference that was prevalent a generation ago. Its only University dependency.
Deciding which one is better is more dependent on the application/job one is capable of doing. Hands-on-experience is preferable to knowledge in many countries. An Engineer without skill is not an Engineer. To focus on this point, B Tech course was developed. This way B Tech is supposed to be closer to an Engineer than BE but now, not the degree but the talent matters. And its not important to have an Engineering Degree or background to be able to what the engineers actually are doing.
There are thousands of examples where people are doing very well along with engineers without having an engineering degree.

and In India B.E. and B.Tech is treated as equivalents.People will prefer a better college or university rather then looking into as the degree offerred is B.E Or B.Tech.

SCOPE: Aeronautical, Aerospace and aircraft maintenance engineering

Aeronautical Engineering course trains an engineer in designing, constructing, analyzing, testing, development and manufacturing of commercial and military aircrafts, missiles, and spacecrafts. Aeronautics focuses on systems that operate in the Earth's atmosphere and Astronautics on those operating in space.
· A student from the science stream with a minimum of 50% in the 12th std is eligible to join the course in almost every college.
· There is distinct difference between aerospace/aeronautical engineering and aircraft maintenance engineering. The former is a degree course and teaches designing and manufacturing of the aircraft, while the latter teaches the servicing the aircraft for its proper functioning
· Aeronautical Engineering is offered by the Indian Institute of Technology in Chennai, Mumbai, Kanpur and Kharagpur and also by the Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh. The Madras Institute of Technology offers a three year Graduate Programme in Aeronautical Engineering for B Sc students, subject to their having passed Maths and Physics at the graduation stage. The Indian Institute of Science (IIS), Bangalore has M Tech and Ph D programmes in Aeronautics.
But the Bombay Flying Club is the only institute in the West Zone to offer a course in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering.
· SCOPE: Four major divisions exist in the Aeronautics side of the Aerospace Industry: military aircraft, civilian aircraft, aircraft engines, and missile systems. Following are the few places these engineers can look forward for their employment. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, DRDO, Air India, Indian Airlines, ISRO.
· There are limited opportunities in this branch, therefore a large number take Research and development areas in Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Civil Aviation, Defense Laboratories or Civil Aviation departments. DATES for application and any other information are available on college prospects or you can search it on net.
